Babe Club are this week’s Sound of the Underground

Gritty, Raw and 70s inspired, Babe Club and their latest track ‘Need a Girl’ are this week’s Sound of the Underground.

Combining a Blondie-esque 70s vibe, with influence from the alt-pop glory days of the 90s; Babe Club are the nostalgic Indie-Rock group we’ve been waiting for.

‘Need a Girl’ is a catchy and groovy track from Babe Club, marked with their signature of gritty guitars, heavenly harmonies and alluring melodies.

With a clever songwriting style which yields songs that explore love, friendship and honest emotion, Babe Club truly are the full package.

We caught up with the band to ask a couple questions about the origins and future plans of Babe Club.

How did the Babe Club dream team come together?

“Lead vocalist/songwriter Jenna Desmond grew up on Long Island NY and learned to play the piano at an early age. Promising herself she wouldn’t study music, for it was not a practical option, she moved to Charleston and studied psychology.

There she inevitably became part of the music scene where she befriended future bandmate, Corey Campbell. Jenna and Corey had an immediate connection musically and began writing together. Corey was a classical pianist finishing up a music degree, and was touring as lead guitarist for indie rock band Susto.

After graduation, Campbell taught Desmond how to play bass in order to tour with the group. They toured with the band for three years, where they honed in on their style and wrote some of their first songs. They left that group at the end of 2018 to form Babe Club. In 2019, the band recorded their first EP in Atlanta at Big Trouble Recording with producer Dan Gleason (member of Grouplove), and engineer TJ Eias (Liz Cooper, Manchester Orchestra).”

Who are some of your musical influences and inspirations?

“Some artists we were listening to at the time when we wrote these songs were Bully, Vampire Weekend, Margaret Glaspy, Alvvays, Angel Olsen. I guess cliché but reading Patti’s Smith’s book, ‘Just Kids’, helped me channel my own energy and confidence into how I wanted to exist.”

Do you have any dreams or goals for Babe Club?

“I’ve watched Grey’s Anatomy since I was 12 years old, and I found so many artists I like because of that show. I want to get one of our songs synced at that show. haha. We want to be writing original songs for movies, and doing scoring.

We’ve already dipped into that world. We both had a transformative experience at Bonnaroo in 2013, and we want to get back as artists. We’d also love to play Glastonbury Festival. Someone suggested one of our new single’s ‘Together’ should be in FIFA, and I’d like that too. This is more a Santa Clause wishlist hah!”

Babe Club have a new single dropping this month titled ‘Automatic Love’, as well as a 5 track EP coming sometime later this autumn. One thing is clear, there is plenty more magic to come from Babe Club.

Keep your eyes peeled for more music and find, follow and support Babe Club.
