After a long 5 years ago wait for Kendrick Lamar fans it was a good week with the release of his brand new album, Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers.
This new offering sees Kendrick take aim at his own image and delves into the darker sides of his psyche and has been Kendrick’s most controversial album to date. The album’s brutal honesty and oft-deliberate messiness makes it one of the year’s most fascinating releases despite earning Lamar some of the first mixed reviews of his career.
Kendrick uses isolation to fuel the theme on his new album, “I am not your savior,” he raps, while almost compulsively revealing his sexual history, a bout with writer’s block, relationship troubles, and more.
Kendricks previous albums can only be described as iconic (To Pimp a Butterfly being my personal favourite) only time will tell if this album has the icon status and longevity of Kendrick’s other masterpieces.
What is clear is that Kendrick is an artist who isn’t afraid to put out music that he believes in and stick to his creative vision.
