Acclaimed British jazz drummer Pete Cater is set to return on May 1st, 2026, with the digital release of his new EP, West Side Story. The project marks another important chapter in a career defined by musical precision, independence and a deep commitment to jazz performance.
Recorded in a school hall during the summer break, West Side Story was created in an unconventional setting, yet the result is described as a rich, high-end recording with the quality and impact of a major studio production. Featuring a line-up of exceptional musicians, the EP reflects Cater’s continuing drive to explore new creative possibilities while maintaining the standards that have made him one of the UK’s most respected jazz drummers.
Cater’s reputation has been built over decades. Born in Staffordshire in 1963, he was introduced to jazz at an early age through his father, a semi-professional drummer. By his early teens, Cater was already performing live, and at 29 he moved to London, a decision that helped shape a career built on resilience, self-belief and artistic integrity.
To accompany the release, Pete Cater will bring The Great Drum Show to two major live dates in May. Fans can see him perform on May 17th at Pizza Express in Soho, followed by a show on May 20th at the Concorde Club in Eastleigh. These performances will give audiences the chance to experience Cater’s dynamic stage presence and powerful musicianship in person.
Now based in West Sussex, Cater continues to champion independent music through his own record label and his wider support of grassroots artists. With West Side Story and the upcoming Great Drum Show performances, he reaffirms his place as a leading figure in contemporary British jazz.
